When people hear that I’ve spent more than 15 years working in the coaching and personal development industry, they often assume I started out as a coach.
But the truth is, I entered the industry from a completely different angle.
I didn’t become a coach.
I became the person helping coaches build their businesses online.
This is the story of how I merged my passion for personal development with my background in technology and marketing to help coaches, consultants, authors, and subject matter experts scale their impact.

The Early Corporate Years
My journey started after university.
During my placement year, I worked at Tetley Tea, and I genuinely loved the experience. The company culture was fantastic, and after finishing university, I returned there briefly before moving into a role with Sun Microsystems, which at the time was one of the leading Fortune 500 technology companies in the world.
Working in corporate IT gave me valuable experience, but alongside my professional career, something else had captured my attention:
Personal development.
Even at university, I was deeply fascinated by how the human mind works. For my dissertation in Information Systems, I actually created an emotional intelligence psychometric test. That project sparked a deeper curiosity about human behaviour, mindset, emotions, and performance.
From there, I immersed myself in books, seminars, and training around:
- NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
- Hypnosis
- Life coaching
- Emotional intelligence
- Human behaviour and psychology
I wasn’t just casually interested in the subject. I was passionate about it.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
One conversation completely shifted the direction of my career.
At the time, I was exploring whether I wanted to become a coach myself. A friend noticed my growing interest in the coaching world and asked if I planned to pursue it professionally.
I told him I was considering it.
Then he said something I’ll never forget:
“Most coaches are broke.”
That genuinely shocked me.
I knew many coaches were incredibly talented at what they did. They transformed lives, inspired people, and delivered immense value. So how could they struggle financially?
His answer was simple:
“They don’t know how to market themselves.”
That sentence stayed with me.
It planted a seed in my mind that eventually became the foundation of my business.
Discovering the Power of Information Products and Funnels
Not long after that conversation, I attended a workshop led by Janet Switzer, a renowned marketing strategist who had worked with legends such as:
- Zig Ziglar
- Jim Rohn
- Les Brown
- Jack Canfield
That event became a major turning point in my life.
At the workshop, Janet explained how experts build empires by packaging their knowledge into:
- Online courses
- Information products
- Lead magnets
- Sales funnels
- Email sequences
- Digital programs
I was blown away.
For the first time, I could clearly see how technology and personal development could work together.
I realised that coaches and experts didn’t necessarily need to trade time for money forever. If they could package their knowledge correctly, they could scale their expertise and reach more people online.
That was my epiphany moment.
Combining Technology and Personal Development
Sitting in that workshop, I suddenly gained complete clarity.
I realised I didn’t need to become a coach myself to contribute to the industry.
Instead, I could become the person helping coaches:
- Position themselves online
- Build their brands
- Create marketing systems
- Generate leads
- Automate follow-up
- Launch workshops and online programs
- Scale their businesses through technology
That was the moment Digital Rapport® was truly born in spirit.
I decided I wanted to work specifically with:
- Coaches
- Consultants
- Authors
- Subject matter experts
People who had incredible knowledge and transformational skills but needed support with the technical and marketing side of business growth.
Learning Through Real-World Experience
Soon after, I met one of my early mentors, Ron Holland.
When I first looked him up online, I could barely find anything about him, which immediately highlighted the gap between expertise and online visibility.
Ron already had books, content, workshops, and years of experience. What he needed was a digital strategy.
Together, we started building:
- Lead magnets
- Email lists
- Sales funnels
- Workshops
- Joint venture partnerships
- Online marketing campaigns
These were the early days of internet marketing.
Back then, things were far more manual than they are today. We even experimented with building our own basic autoresponder system before platforms like Infusionsoft became widely known.
Over time, we grew mailing lists, hosted live workshops in Central London, created partnerships, and built systems that helped generate real business growth.
Most importantly, I learned how to bridge the gap between expertise and technology.
Helping Coaches Overcome Technology Overwhelm
One thing became very clear over the years:
Many coaches and consultants are brilliant at what they do, but technology overwhelms them.
Funnels, email systems, websites, automation tools, CRMs, scheduling platforms, integrations — it can quickly become confusing and frustrating.
That’s where my role evolved.
Rather than trying to teach every coach how to become a tech expert, I focused on becoming the strategic technology and marketing partner behind the scenes.
We would tell clients:
“You focus on your zone of genius. We’ll handle the technology.”
That approach allowed many experts to:
- Focus on serving clients
- Create content consistently
- Launch workshops and courses
- Build online visibility
- Scale more effectively
From Fragmented Tools to All-in-One Platforms
In the early days, building online systems often meant stitching together multiple tools:
- WordPress websites
- Email platforms
- Payment gateways
- Plugins
- Scheduling systems
- Landing page software
It worked, but it was messy.
If one piece broke, the whole system could fail.
As the industry evolved, so did the technology.
Today, we now have access to powerful an all-in-one platform (SalesMasterHub) that simplify everything:
- Funnels
- CRM systems
- Email marketing
- Automations
- Text messaging
- Booking systems
- Membership areas
- Payment processing
- Analytics
This has made it far easier for coaches and consultants to scale online without the same level of technical overwhelm that existed years ago.
The Bigger Mission
Looking back, I can clearly see that everything connected together:
- My background in IT and technology
- My fascination with personal development
- My passion for helping people grow
- My interest in systems and automation
I simply found a way to merge those passions into one mission.
For more than two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible coaches, consultants, business mentors, and experts, helping them bring their ideas, services, and transformational work into the digital world.
And honestly, I still love it today just as much as I did when I first discovered this path.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes clarity doesn’t come from forcing a decision.
Sometimes it comes from recognising where your passions naturally intersect.
For me, that intersection was:
- Personal development
- Technology
- Marketing
- Coaching
- Business
That combination created a career and business path I never originally expected, but one I’m incredibly grateful for.
If you’re a coach, consultant, or expert struggling with the technology or marketing side of your business, remember this:
You don’t have to do everything alone.
Focus on your expertise. Focus on the value you bring to people.
The systems, technology, and strategy can always be built around your vision.
And often, that’s where the real growth begins.
